Llama: models, licensing and self-hosting
Llama includes models with downloadable weights. Evaluate the exact version’s license together with hosting and operating costs.

Models and use
The official catalog lists Llama 4 Scout and Maverick alongside earlier generations. Self-hosting and third-party APIs differ in hardware, context limits and data handling. Record version, quantization and usable context; a stated maximum does not establish output quality.
License and EU rule
The Llama 4 Community License includes license distribution and attribution requirements for applicable redistribution. Its separate licensing rule applies above 700 million monthly active users as defined in the agreement. The Use Policy also excludes EU-domiciled individuals and companies with their principal place of business in the EU from the multimodal Llama 4 rights grant; end users of integrated products are excepted. Do not apply that rule to every Llama version.
Costs and operations
Royalty-free licensing does not provide free infrastructure. Budget GPU, memory, utilization, maintenance and security updates, or the chosen host’s API charges. Self-hosting enables your own controls but guarantees neither privacy compliance nor absence of data transfers. Review logs, telemetry, backups, permissions and external integrations.
